Born and raised in a remote area of Giyani, Mabunda has built a media empire from scratch.

With over 14 years of experience in print and broadcast journalism, Mabunda has worked with various media outlets, including Greater Alex Today, Alex FM 89.1, Phalaborwa FM, and Energy FM. His passion for storytelling and community development led him to establish Kuvoninga Media, which publishes Giyani View and other titles.

Under Mabunda’s leadership, Giyani View has become a beacon of hope for young journalists, providing work experience to over 20 individuals, many of whom have secured jobs with reputable organizations. The newspaper’s success is a testament to Mabunda’s vision and dedication to empowering his community.

Mabunda’s journey is an inspiration to many young people in Giyani and beyond. He believes in giving back to the community and has been involved in various initiatives aimed at promoting education and youth development.

One of Mabunda’s notable achievements is steering Giyani View to become the first black-owned youth publication in Mopani, successfully maintaining operations without financial support from MDDA grants or other sources. This is a remarkable feat, considering the challenges faced by many media outlets in the region.

Launched in March 2017, Giyani View obtained full registration at the National Library of South Africa in May 2017. Today, it is one of the leading community newspapers in the region, known for its in-depth coverage of local issues and stories that matter.

Mabunda’s qualifications are a testament to his commitment to excellence in media. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Science, National Certificate in Journalism, Diploma in Media Studies, FET certificate in Advertising, and Micro Enterprise Certificate. These qualifications have equipped him with the skills and knowledge needed to navigate the ever-changing media landscape.

As Mabunda continues to lead Giyani View and Kuvoninga Media, his vision for the future remains clear: to empower communities through quality journalism and create opportunities for young people in the media industry.

Compiled by Tinyiko Maswanganyi

Blessing Martin Mabunda, the 37-year-old founding CEO of Kuvoninga Media Pty Ltd, is the driving force behind Giyani View, a pioneering newspaper in Mopani.
